Parents win funding to support baby and toddler groups

A local Mum has been at the forefront of a campaign group that has been awarded £20,000 (£10,000 from Wantage Town Council and £10,000 from Oxfordshire County Council) towards keeping baby and toddler groups running in Wantage and Grove following the imminent closure of Oxfordshire Children’s Centre services.

Michelle Rozier from Wantage and Mum to 11-month-old Freya, has rallied support from fellow parents to establish the Wantage and Grove Parents Community Group (pictured).

The Group is key to securing funding as well as providing a pool of volunteers to help deliver baby groups such as Bumps & Beyond, which takes place at The Beacon in Wantage, every Monday.

Mrs Rozier said: “We are delighted to win funding from Wantage Town Council and Oxfordshire County Council to help ensure parents continue to have access to a local support network provided through the baby and toddler groups.  Our aim is to ensure the groups are still running for the next generation of parents.  To do that, we will need additional support.”

The Wantage and Grove Parents Community Group has been started-up following the combined effort of Councillors Zoe Patrick and Jenny Hannaby in addition to St John’s Parish Church in Grove and other members of the community.

Cllr. Zoe Patrick, Chair of the Community Initiative Steering group said: "All the group have worked tirelessly over many months trying to keep these very valuable services going in our community. We are pleased to have received funding but it is vital that we secure more funding from councils, businesses and other sources to ensure that we can continue."

Access to parenting groups are particularly important in helping combat post-natal depression in addition to providing a support network for parents who are new to the area.
